If Fermi's launch was anything to go by, then it'll take Nvidia another year to work out the kinks in Kepler. In games where the HD 79XX do relatively poorer, like "BF3", the HD 7870 might be beaten by its predecessors. In games where compute performance is important, like "Civ V", the HD 7870 will probably outperform the HD 6970. What I'm saying is that the HD 78XX will behave much like its bigger brothers. I wouldn't be surprised with one running 1.2GHz under 200W of power. Of course, this discounts GCN's ability to ridiculously overclock. Memory speed is also fine, since GDDR5 is quad-rate thus the "effective" speed is about 5GHz - the same as the HD 7950. Memory bandwidth is very similar to the HD 69XX given the identical bus size. The relatively large memory deficit is best attributed to the HD 7950's enormous (and expensive) 384-bit memory bus. If these specifications are correct, the HD 7870 has 89% of the shader and texture output, 93% of the ROP output, and 63% of the memory bandwidth of the HD 7950. The best comparison would be with the HD79XX line. Remember the 640-core HD 7770 outperformed the 800-core 5770. Comparing the HD 69XX's VLIW4 architecture to HD 78XX's GCN architecture is incredibly misleading, as GCN cores are much more efficient. I think you're not reading the information correctly. There's always that chance that they've got another juggernaut coming. But if Nvidia is to be believed, we'll see what they've got on March 23rd. I already know what the 6900s can do and they are not strong enough to satisfy what I intend to build, but I'm not willing to go for the 7900s because I'd rather save a bit of money. If there is no 7890 or these 7870s do not perform better than the 6970, then people will be forced to look towards the 7900s or Nvidia's cards when they are released. I can see power consumption being important, but not more important than graphics performance for an enthusiast. If its price was such, it must be stronger than the 6970, otherwise, not many would go for it. If the 7870 is $300, then expect the rumored 7890 to be $350.

There were rumors of a 7890 which would bridge the performance gap between mainstream and enthusiast. If the price range is correct, then expect these cards to perform less than the 6900's.
